Jamaica's Cultural Iceberg

Hello, fifth graders! Today, we are going to learn something very interesting about Jamaican culture using a video called "Jamaica's Cultural Iceberg". This video will help us understand that what we see in a culture (like its music, food, or clothing) is only a small part of everything that makes it special. The video is included in the instructions, so you will watch it on your own. Let's discover together what lies beneath the surface!

Steps for the Activity

Before watching the video:
  • Think about Jamaica. What words or images come to your mind when you hear "Jamaica"?
  • Write those words in your notebook or share them with the class. There are no wrong answers!
Watch the video on your own:

  • The video "Jamaica's Cultural Iceberg" is included in the instructions. Watch it carefully at home or during your independent study time.

After watching the video:

Let's reflect together. Answer these questions in a Padlet forum or in your notebook: https://padlet.com/yecaly2004/video-jamaica-s-cultural-iceberg-answers-g5krmkcoadilcdz7

  • What new words or ideas did you learn from the video?
  • How does the iceberg metaphor help you better understand the different layers of a culture?
  • Which part of the hidden layers of Jamaican culture do you find the most interesting or exciting?

Share your answers with your classmates and listen to what they think.

Remember:

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions if something isn't clear!
  • Culture is like an iceberg: what we see is only a small part, but there is so much more to discover beneath the surface.

I'm sure we'll learn amazing things together! 😊

Icebreaker Activity (Individual):

"Cultural Iceberg Word Game"

  • Objective:

Activate your prior knowledge and spark curiosity about both the visible and hidden aspects of Jamaican culture.

  • Instructions

Review the Iceberg Image

On our Padlet board (or class document), you'll see the same iceberg image. Remember:

  • The tip (top) shows common stereotypes you already know (e.g., reggae, beaches).
  • The hidden part (below the waterline) represents deeper cultural elements (language, traditions, food, art, sports, history).

Think and Write

  • In the "Tip" box of your personal Padlet post, write three words or short phrases that describe what you already know about Jamaica (the visible stereotypes).
  • In the "Hidden" box, write three words or short phrases for things you'd like to learn more about (the deeper cultural elements).

Use Class Vocabulary

  • Try to include at least two of our target words (like reggae, jerk chicken, patois, festival, carnival). Write your ideas in simple English sentences or phrases.

Post Your Iceberg

  • Create a new post on Padlet:
https://padlet.com/yecaly2004/cultural-iceberg-word-game-6is06o4zwprkxxgy
  • Use the two text fields provided: one labeled Tip and one labeled Hidden.
  • You may also draw a small icon or add a sticker to illustrate each idea.

Explore and Respond

  • After posting, read at least two classmates' icebergs. Then, leave a positive comment on one
  • What new "hidden" element do you also find interesting?
  • Which vocabulary word did they use that you'd like to practice?

Interactive Component

Use Padlet (or our chosen collaborative tool) to:

  • Post your individual iceberg diagram.
  • Comment on classmates' posts to build a shared class "iceberg" of Jamaican culture

Tips for a Great Iceberg

  • Be Honest: There are no right or wrong ideas—share what you truly know and wonder.
  • Be Curious: Choose "hidden" elements that excite you most (maybe a dance, food, or festival!).
  • Be Clear: Keep your phrases short and simple so everyone can understand your iceberg.

Have fun discovering how much more there is to Jamaica beyond the surface!
